Yokai Watch 2: An episode fuller than the first

A year after its first steps in the hexagon, Yokai Watch already offers a return among us via two new versions acting as direct suite: Spirits Farceurs and Fantômes Bouffis. Unsurprisingly, this second episode must follow the usual roadmap of any good series when it comes time to go to a second opus: to confirm the good pre-dispositions of the first while correcting the defects of youth of the original adventure.

The first episode placed us in the shoes of a young man or a young woman who loves insect hunting, who found himself overnight with a Yokai Watch. This formidable tool allowed him to spot, capture and then train the Yokai, creatures invisible to the eyes of humans but who have the power to influence their moods and their everyday life. Yokai Watch 2 does not change this principle but starts on a bad idea, that of making us relive a practically similar introduction by playing on the sudden amnesia of his hero. Scenaristically justified with a certain clumsiness, the idea ends in a furious impression of déjà vu, of which we would have done well.

Fortunately, the story takes off after a few hours and then allows us to explore a much larger playground. We find a pleasant narrative to follow, which will allow us not only to explore several cities but also to discover the origins of the Yokai Watch via returns in the past. More surprising, despite the naïve character of the characters and a generally childish tone, this second version of Yokai Watch still manages to make his casting endearing and sympathetic.

SECONDARY QUARTERS AND YOKAI CAPTURE

Yokai Watch 2: An episode fuller than the first
The playground to explore is extensive.
Add to this all new quests and creatures and you get a roster of more than 300 monsters to capture, what to do during dozens and tens of hours of game. We regret the presence of too many quests Recovery of objects, unfortunately even more numerous than in the first opus, while greeting the arrival of mini-games of successful rhythm that allow to vary a bit the pleasures. Indeed, Level 5 had the curious idea of adding a system of travel by trains to allow you to explore the vast world of Yokai Watch 2. Curious, because if on paper the initiative is commendable, In fact it is impossible to pass the journey and you will soon have to privilege fast points of displacement at the expense of a train system yet attractive.

On the other hand, the capture of creatures should once again make you addicted, especially since this one has considerably gained in readability: you can now directly probe the Yokai to know their culinary weak point and take advantage of it, what to hope See them join your ranks at the end of the meal. The Yokai recruitment conditions were sometimes nebulous in the first opus, and Yokai Watch 2 is much better off on this point.

SIMPLE COMBATS ...

On the fighting side, the novelties are discrete but are perfectly grafted to a system of confrontation already well oiled. You will have to place 6 Yokai on a wheel and rotate it to define which 3 active monsters of the combat, making sure to place the monsters with similar affinities side by side. These will automatically attack your opponent while you can manually trigger other abilities, which however remained meager in the first episode and triggered by fun mini-games but very quickly repetitive.

... BUT WHO WIN IN DEPTH

Yokai Watch 2: An episode fuller than the first
Whisper over the city.
The arrival of the Zero mode makes it possible to involve more the player in the heart of the fighting, in particular via an improvement of the attack agultime which implies sacrificing part of the energy of a Yokai Voisin. Similarly, the ability to probe enemy weaknesses provides more depth in tactical options. The fighting, however, is far too simple in the classical clashes and reveals their potential only during the boss fights, a defect inherited from the first opus that was not corrected during the passage to this second episode. Another novelty is the non-negligible integration of multiplayer combat and online exchanges, justified here by the presence of creatures unpublished in each version. Without having much new to propose, the system should allow to expand the still nascent community of the title.

A PRIDE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE 3DS
Yokai Watch 2: An episode fuller than the first
The fighting has some new features.
Finally, difficult not to evoke the overall realization of the title, which has not lost on the way and offers us a level again very appreciable for a machine the caliber of the Nintendo 3DS. Visually very successful, Yokai Watch 2 offers many color effects on the attacks, a French dubbing on the cinematics without forgetting themes always well felt - a bit more varied than those of the founding episode, by the way - To general immersion.
